Premarital Counseling in Hoboken, NJ: Getting to Know Yourselves Before “I Do”
You’re engaged! This can be one of the most joyous times in your life as a couple, and it can also be one of the most stressful. Picture a Tuesday night: a guest list open on one laptop, a vendor email waiting on the other, and a conversation about whose family hosts what that somehow turned into something bigger than either of you meant it to be. You’re planning a wedding while doing everything else your life already asks of you.
So what happens when things start getting harder?
If you’ve started thinking about seeing someone who can help, it doesn’t mean anything is wrong. It means you’re hoping to connect.
Counseling Doesn’t Mean Something Is Wrong
Hard moments during an engagement aren’t a verdict on your relationship. They’re an invitation. You already love each other. You’re already committed. Now the curiosity can keep growing.
Premarital counseling takes two complex, complicated people (which is all of us) and gives them time on the calendar to go deeper, with guidance and intention.
What Premarital Counseling Looks Like With IFIO
I work with couples using IFIO, Intimacy from the Inside Out, an approach built on Internal Family Systems (IFS). The idea is simple to say and rich to live: each of you connects with yourself, so that the two of you can connect with each other.
My role in the room is to be a kind of relational coach between what each of your inner worlds is like. I’m helping you connect with everything that you are, and helping your partner do the same.
Imagine bearing witness to someone you love as they see something inside themselves for the first time. Maybe it’s something they never knew was there. Maybe it’s something they’ve always known but never explored. Maybe it’s something they were too scared to get closer to, until they had you beside them. Then imagine your partner doing the same for you.
Learning Each Other From the Inside Out
When things get hard, something happens inside you, and something different happens inside your partner. What is that dance? Why does it keep showing up?
In this work you might learn how your partner’s body tenses or shakes in a tough moment. They might learn how a part of you starts to overthink. You can both trace yourselves back to before this relationship began, so the present starts to make more sense. All parts are welcome here, including the ones that show up at the worst possible time.
A few questions we get curious about together:
— What is happening inside of you when your partner is having what’s happening inside of them?
— What do you need your partner to know about your experience?
— What does your partner need you to know?
If the same things keep happening, they don’t stop on their own. They soften with dedicated care and compassion. That’s the work, and it’s a great gift to give someone you love: to witness, to learn, and then to move toward them in what they need.
You Don’t Have to Be in Crisis
The couples I work with don’t have to be in crisis. They don’t have to be on track for separation, with this as a last hope. Many simply have a sense of wanting more, and that is often a deepening of a relationship they already love and cherish.
IFIO invites a deeper relationship with yourself as well as with your partner, so you both feel fuller. More love. It’s a beautiful thing to spend time on: being with someone who loves you, loving yourselves, and learning how to be with even the hardest parts of each other.

Frequently Asked Questions:
No. Many couples come in because they want more, not because something is broken. Seeking support while engaged is a way of investing in what you already have.
IFIO stands for Intimacy from the Inside Out. It’s an IFS-based approach to couples work that focuses on each partner’s inner world, so connection with yourself supports connection with each other.
No. I work with couples at any stage, whether you’re dating, engaged, or married. IFIO applies to any couple hoping to deepen or change the way they relate to one another.
Sessions are 60 minutes and weekly, with both of you in the room. Occasionally, when one of you is interested, we also meet separately. If you’re nervous, that’s okay. Acknowledge the nervousness, take a deep breath of courage, and see if you can feel safe enough to enter the room, where real change can begin.
Both. I see couples in person at my Hoboken office and virtually throughout New Jersey.
